Left-wing celebrities and television hosts are woefully ignorant when it comes to understanding the Second Amendment and it’s purpose for American citizens, leading a lot of them to say incredibly stupid things about a subject they really know very little about.
After the latest mass shooting in Las Vegas, the “hashtag activists” have once again leapt on to their social media platforms and television programs to, safely from a distance, make the call that all guns should be banned, that no American needs to protect themselves with a weapon, as that’s what police officers are for.
Never mind the fact the right to bear arms, which is for defense of life, property, and liberty, is a God-given right. No, the government — the same people who run the DMV — know what’s best for you and me.
While there have been plenty of stupid comments made in light of this recent tragedy, none are as moronic as that which came from TV host Bill Maher. According to Maher, the Second Amendment existed to protect slavery.
From Truth Revolt:
He began the topic of firearm rights with accusations of racism (Say it ain’t so!), while conceding, surprisingly, that racism isn’t completely ubiquitous:
“I know it drives Republicans crazy when liberals say everything is about race and everything isn’t about race. But I feel like guns is the one area where, if you can’t see a giant difference between the way black and white are treated in America with guns, I think there’s a little racism in you.”
The Real Time ringmaster proceeded to claim that if any non-white commits a heinous crime such as the recent Las Vegas massacre, legislative ramifications abound:
“And the Vegas shooter himself, you know, it seems like when the shooter–if he was Muslim, certainly it would have been about, ‘Let’s…get the ban going.’ If he was a Mexican, it would be about the wall. And I feel like, when it’s the white guy, it’s like, ‘We don’t know how this happened.’”
Maher indulged in that very effort with his endorsement of a novel perspective on the right to bear arms, as contended by Gary Willis in the 4th of July edition of The New York Times:
“[The Second Amendment] shows just how far the poison of slavery pervaded the Constitution. It was intended to protect slave holders who used militias to keep a firm grip on their slaves. It wasn’t meant to let individuals prevent federal tyranny. How could it? It was meant to guarantee the legality of well-regulated militias to handle the states’ internal problems, especially the problem of a large slave population.”
The amount of sheer idiocy oozing out of this one man is enough to leave even the most brilliant mind astounded.
The purpose of the Second Amendment was so that the citizens of our great nation would have the ability to defend their liberty against a tyrannical government, should they attempt to oppress them.
Secondarily, it was designed so that each individual and their family could be responsible for their own safety, not having to rely on anyone else for protection of life and property.
An average response from police after a call is something like eight minutes. That’s eight minutes you’re on your own. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had the tools at your disposal during that time to protect yourself?
Also, criminals don’t obey the law. Gun bans don’t stop the bad guys. Murder is currently illegal — unless you’re an unborn child — yet that doesn’t stop awful people from killing others. If that isn’t enough, what makes anyone think eliminating guns will do the trick?
